Questions and explanations
Separate rules, formats and records
Sports knowledge includes the rules of play, the format of a competition and historical results. Read which sport and version are named before deciding. Similar sports can use different team sizes, scoring systems and playing areas. Records can also depend on the category and the date, so the conditions are part of the question.
Worked example: reading a league table
In a hypothetical competition that awards three points for a win and one for a draw, two wins and one draw produce seven points: 2 × 3 + 1. This is an example rule, not a rule for every sport. The useful skill is to identify the scoring system before doing the calculation.
Make the next run more useful
If a question asks for a normal team size, distinguish players on the field from substitutes in the squad. If it asks about a record, check whether it names a discipline or competition. After playing, use the review to separate facts you knew from choices you guessed. Report a rule or record that seems outdated with the governing body’s source and the relevant competition.
This guide uses separate teaching examples. Report a question or suggest a correction with the game name and the wording you saw.
