Which Ben?
Big Ben may have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who oversaw public works when the bell was installed. The origin is not certain. Another theory points to heavyweight boxer Benjamin Caunt.
Parliament favours Hall as the likely namesake. London’s official visitor guide keeps both explanations in view. It is tempting to give a wonderfully tidy answer; the evidence asks us to leave a little room.
The bell inside the landmark
Strictly speaking, Big Ben is the great bell. The building around it is Elizabeth Tower. Everyday conversation often lends the nickname to the whole landmark.
So when someone says they have seen Big Ben, they probably mean the tower and its clock. The part that earned the name is hidden inside.
An early crack in the story
The first bell cracked during testing and had to be replaced. The replacement was cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry.
